At Hotel Ribno, we like to keep our precious planet clean and make it even greener. We show great care for the environment, especially in terms of waste and drinking water management and reduction of food waste.

What is Zero Waste?

Zero Waste is a social commitment to making lifestyle changes and to adopting natural sustainable systems where
waste material becomes a resource. As the saying goes: 'One man's trash is another man's treasure'!

The main objective of Zero Waste hotels and restaurants is to reduce waste and prevent the release of harmful substances into the air, water and ground. These can in turn pose a risk to human and animal health as well as burden our planet and its ecosystems. In our effort to become a Zero Waste hotel we act according to green management guidelines. These allow us to achieve a closer connection with the local environment and contribute to higher guest and employee satisfaction.

Our part in the Zero Waste Story

Our hotel aims to provide (high quality services for our guests to enjoy and for the benefit of nature. We are planning to sort 90% of the collected waste, reduce waste by 30% and use 30% less water and energy. We will do this by introducing the following:

  • Sorting waste for collection
  • Reusing of towels and bedlinen
  • Refillable soap or shampoo dispensers as well as reusable containers for sugar, jam, honey and other food in the hotel’s restaurant and kitchen
  • Working with local suppliers

This is how you can become part of our Zero Waste story:

  • Sort waste for recycling
  • Drink tap water instead of bottled water
  • Remember to turn off the lights in your room
  • Use reusable bags when going shopping
  • Reuse your towels
  • When dining, only take as much food as you are planning to eat

Zero Waste and Greening of Slovenia:

Zero Waste hotels and restaurants were first introduced by Antonino Esposito in Sorrento, a famous tourist destination in
Italy. So far, he has successfully introduced the concept in 20 hotels and restaurants. He has been working with the Zero Waste national organisation in Slovenia, which is called ‘Ekologi brez meja’ (Ecologists Without Borders) and has been supporting them by sharing his know-how and experience.

Ecologists Without Borders raises public awareness of waste management issues and challenges.  They organised the first ever national cleaning event ‘Očistimo Slovenijo’ (Let’s Make Slovenia Clean) in 2010. In 2014 they became members of the Zero Waste Europe network and Slovenia’s national Zero Waste organisation. They lead the national Zero Waste Municipalities network in an effort to promote the Zero Waste concept amongst hotels and event organisers nationwide.

Hotel Ribno is located in the Municipality of Bled, whose aim is to work towards Zero Waste goals and sort 80% of all waste by
2025. With your help, we are proud to be able to contribute to this goal by acting in a sustainable way.
